Church Music – Let Us Now Hear From You!

Whether the lovely vinyl (which is now sold out, sadly, and relegated to the likes of ebay), a digital download or an actual compact disc, Church Music from THE DC*B has now made it into many hands and hearts, not to mention #3 at iTunes and into the Top Ten on trending topics for twitter yesterday (#churchmusic), and we want to hear from you…I want to hear from you.

Based on the recent comment traffic, I am going out on a huge limb here (or maybe a shaky little branch), but our goal is to get your feedback on the new Church Music offering (hopefully you are loving it as much as I am!) and we’d really like to get more than a few responses!

I think it’s been since Asia and the crazy Kuala Lumpur people that we have had more than 30-something comments on the Blog, so I’m wondering….

My personal favs from Church Music on repeat more often than not are tracks 4, 6 and 15, but I can’t not let the whole thing play beautifully and seamlessly from start to finish at times, either.

If you have no Church Music, get it today! Once you are “robed up” and listening, leave a happy amen here…

    I LOVE it! I listened through the whole album 3 times nonstop after successfully getting it at Wal-Mart, but I’m in love with “Alleluia, Sing” “Eastern Hymn” and “We Are Loved.” By the end of the night I couldn’t stop listening to the epic amazingness of “God Almighty, None Compares.” God used that song to answer a prayer I prayed that morning to set my heart once again in a constant state of worship because of the grand magnificence of God that’s truly displayed in the lyrics, especially in that opening verse. Thank DC*B for me. :-)

    Louie, since you asked, I want you to know that I think Church Music is great! Very creative, top-notch musicianship. I am consistently impressed with the places DC*B will go. I love the album!

    However, as a lead worshiper in a local congregation, I was a little disappointed (and I mean only a LITTLE) that there aren’t a tone of song on here that can easily translate to the corporate worship scene. Most of them are either too complicated musically or just not very singable for the average church, I think.

    Now, I realize that the guys may not have been going for a cookie-cutter worship album, and like I said, I think it is great. But I wonder if you might get some people who were expecting more singable (corporately) songs.

    Keep up the good work though, I love sixsteps and Passion!

    I’ve been anticipating this CD for such a long time. I had a count down on my phone and everything so I could know the amount of days and minutes until “Church Music” was released on iTunes. I got online at midnight and it seemed like iTunes was hiding it from me. But then, I found it. The only time I have put it on pause or anything is when I’m forced because of a soccer practice. David Crowder* Band has truly been blessed with an ability to not only write lyrics, but write music. The CD is unbelievable. Shadows is probably my favorite song. Especially the line, “We’ll remember the cost, We’re resting in the shadow of the cross.” I’m so grateful for God writing lyrics on the hearts of my favorite bands. I’m so excited for PASSION2010!

    P.S. – Passion also has its own countdown….101 days! I’m so stoked!

    Like many,I too was anticipating the release of this album. It is AMAZING!!! Sooo worth the wait! DC*B is my favorite band& they constantly remind me of that with every song. They are truly a worship band who’s heart you can see through music&lyrics. May God continue to use them in His work to save souls. God bless=)

    I have had ample time to listen to it and the more i listen to it, the more i am so thankful for bands like the Crowder Band. You can tell they put so much heart, energy and creativity into their offerings and with this album, with this title, i feel it is a very important statement on what music for the church actually is.

    Imagine my surprise and delight, as it has been well publicized that the tracks run together, that the CD actually loops back to the beginning seemless as well. Has any other band even done that yet? Well played, well played indeed.

    As to the content, i can’t describe it as anything but joy. The layered instrumentation of each song gives the album just a fun feel, but its not just poppy fun. Everything is intentional and matches up with the lyrics and melodies. Even the more reflective songs aren’t too heavy but still divert our attention to the cross or faithfulness or power of God. Several songs provoke goosebumps in how they bleed into each other as well (The Veil, We are Loved among many others, for instance). I literally hum throughout the day “O Happiness, this grace, enough for us and the whole human race” and “we will not fear, we will remember” and “what a Savior, what a King.”

    Also, Crowder never has been one to try and create the normative worship song for congregations. And that’s a good thing. We ought to be continually stretched and moving towards something much deeper than the familiar catchy worship tunes. They are important but they should in no way be the necessary standard for entering into God’s presence with His people.

    Thank you sixsteps for giving artists like these the outlet to craft such significant music, even if it is ‘church music.’Can’t wait for 9/20 in Clearwater, and for TwentyTen!

    Church Music = Amazing! Of course, I’ve come to expect nothing less from Crowder*; they always bring us something genuine and beautiful. I don’t have a favorite yet, though I’ve enjoyed singing “How He Loves” along with the radio over the past few weeks. It’s sheer happiness, people. Happiness.

    Finally have a copy! Husband wanted the CD version because he likes to have the artwork and inserts, so I went to Lifeway to buy one for him. The lady working in music asked me if I needed some help. I responded, “Yes ma’am! Do you have Church Music?” To which she answered, “Yes, honey. What kind would you like?” I stumbled and fumbled a bit, and then said “Umm… the David Crowder one.”

    We found the stash. I snagged a copy, immediately loaded it to my iphone, and have been listening to it ever since. Great work, folks! Thanks for yet another EXCELLENT project!

    been listening straight through as often as i can since i got the vinyl/cd/digital pre-order yesterday. i have to say that right off the bat Alleluia, Sing, Shadows, How He Loves (love the album version) and Can I Lie Here are instant favorites.

    Many of these will find their way into our ministry I am certain. Thank the guys for taking a big creative leap here.

    I have been counting down to this album since the release date was announced- and have been blown away with it. DCB has outdone themselves once again. Eastern Hymn is actually one of my favorites, along with Shadows and God Almighty, None Compares.
    I lead worship at our churches Wed. night youth gathering- decently sized, about 250-300 a night—and tonight we are having “Church Music Wednesday” in an attempt to get our youth more energized about listening to God honoring music. They always drop the “Christian music is boring” excuse; well they can’t do that with this album. Tonight we are gonna show that little intro movie ya’ll put on Youtube (with Crowder in the choir robe) and do other various things to hype it up.
    Excited to hear these songs in Atlanta this November…and even more stoked about 2010!

    It’s great, and I applaud DCB for their creativity and maximizing the talent which God has blessed them. I also appreciate the content – 17 songs. Favorite song is the Flyleaf cover, All Around Me – nice acoustic touch.

    Disappointment was with the pre release singles on iTunes. How He Loves, album version, wasn’t included on the complete my album purchase.

    However, it is not the best Passion/Six Steps release this year. That honor belongs to Matt Redman – We Shall Not be Shaken.

    We’ve had the disc for less than a day, and my 2 & 1/2 year old daughter is already asking “Daddy – Happiness please!” in the car as we rock Church Music!

    Such a cool vibe throughout. Hard to get #2 & #15 out my head, and #9 is just an amazing song. “Phos Hilaron” is up there for me, too – the spoken version you’ve used at Passion events is one of the coolest corporate expressions of worship I’ve ever been a part of! The earliest Church music we know of is definitely a beautiful, fitting place from which to launch out into these newest songs of the Church.

    I thought this album was legen–wait for it–dary!! (sorry, had to throw that ‘how i met your mother’ reference in here)..Like Chris previously said, DC*B brings consistent unexpectedness with all their albums…There are just so many surprises throughout (i.e. track 9) and track 3 which [awesomely] comes out of nowhere like “You Are My Joy” on a previous album. If anyone listens to this musical feat, DC*B will forever be on their playlist. It’s very apparent that the band and sixsteps worked very hard on this album and I know God will bless them for their acheivement. The band is one of those rare bands that truly care about the fans (and not just the dollar $igns coming in). This is obvious through the vinyl signings, infinite and entertaining Youtube videos, and their stellar concert performances (can’t wait for Nov13!!). You can tell an album as a whole is great when you don’t just listen to one or two tracks, but a whole bunch. For example, my fav so far are tracks 3,5-10,12,15,+16. I honestly tried to condense that list, but I failed. If you don’t have David Crowder Band’s “Church Music,” run to a store near you!!

    Honestly, at first listen I really didn’t know what to make of it. I mean, I was enjoying it, but kind of the same way a little kid would eat his first Thanksgiving Dinner. It’s a lot of different flavors to take in, but in the end, it’s quite delicious. I’ve now had time to savor Church Music, and it’s a full-on, 4-course meal!

    I’m ready to “Dance” come January in ATL… who’s bringing the disco ball?

    Also, Dave, good job on the sock drawer, not sure about it being on the bottom row, mine’s at the top, but to each his own I guess.

    Church Music is AMAZING!! It had me right from the get-go with ‘How He Loves’ (I have had that on repeat for the last week or so with the line ‘He is jealous for me, loves like a hurricane, I am a tree’ running through my head constantly) and then with We are Loved (one that I have especially been dancing my heart out to!). I also really love Shadows, The Veil, Oh Happiness, and What A Miracle. It is just a well-rounded album all up :)

    What I appreciate most about the Crowder band is what another person on here said… the fact that they not only write deep lyrics but the way they write music that complements these lyrics in an incredibly creative way! :)

    We have somewhat similar tastes. 4 and 15 are also two favorites of mine. I also listened to another favorite (How He Loves) on vinyl yesterday which was needless to say AWESOME! All of that topped off by a quick peek in Crowder’s sock drawer and yesterday was without a doubt a wonderful day…

    By the way, Pastor Louie definitely fits. You’ve pastored me from afar quite a few years now. Thanks so much to all of you guys at Passion and sixsteps. See you at TwentyTen!

    The DC*B have completely outdone themselves yet again. The flow and movement of the album as one large work is seamless and thoroughly complete, different from Remedy and wonderfully reminiscent of A Collision in terms of the musical surprises, the stylistic diversity, and it takes me to Jesus. The tunes all stand very well individually, previous tracks compliment the one you are listening to very well but are not critical if you’ve only got time to listen one.

    I am so thankful for the likes of The DC*B because, in my opinion, they are one of the most innovative, outside of the box, envelope pushing bands not just in worship or Christian music, but on the face of the Earth. I am a professional musician, active performer/writer, and longtime connoisseur of music from around the world. My personal tastes range from Delta Blues to solo Marimba music, the Indonesian Gamelan to classic rock, jazz to Euro-Club/Dance, American Folk to Merengue, Korean Art and Folk Music to 1970’s Funk Fusion and so much more. As someone else commented, the overpopulated underqualified CCM formulaic sound that grinds against my soul is completely destroyed by this album and band. As Crowder said in the interview while wearing a choir robe….:-D….the idea of creating a musical cathedral that points the worshiper to Jesus through a beautiful artistic expression is so evident here, this is indeed a musical Cistine Chapel.

    While this album is musically complex and diverse and may not lend itself overly well to most congregational worship settings due to those factors, this in no way diminishes what has been accomplished and contributed in this sonic manifesto of rock and roll, Euro-pop, etc. My hats off to what has been done here.

    I’ve listened to it all the way through several times since picking it up Tuesday morning. After doing so, my current favorites/what is speaking to my heart are the following tracks:

    Track 4-Shadows-As I listen to this and am reminded of the Light of the Cross amidst the darkness of the world, my heart inexplicably began crying out in desperation for the Rescuer to come and save me again. I am already in saving relationship with Jesus, but this song brought me to my knees and had my heart crying out for the direct intervention of Jesus to physically rescue me from the darkness surrounding us. This song does not merely shine a light on our sinful conduct and guilty state before the Lord, causing us to realize the need for a Savior based on our moral failures, it probes even further into the heart than that. It shines a light on that deepest of human needs: a reason for being and how that is defined.

    Track 9-All Around Me-The piano’s somber and ponderous wanderings fit so well with the quiet, poetic, and desperate words of someone groping around in the darkness looking for Him. The chorus gives a deep sense of reassurance, of knowing His presence in us and around us in a constant fellowship with us, whether we realize it or not in any given moment. The violin starts to sing near the end and it only places further pressure on One’s soul to cry out in desperation, looking for the Christ and Savior of the World and we find Him.

    Track 10-How He Loves-I’ve been living in 1 John, reading the book every day for the last three weeks in my devotional life. No mysteries as to why a chorus, though it was written by our friend John Mark McMillan, that goes “He loves us, oh how He loves us, oh how He loves us, oh how He loves” resonates so deeply with my heart right now. Read 1 John 3:1…

    Track 13-Church Music-It’s so “not” church music as we understand it, rather a call to boogie and have a good time partying in the house of God and honoring Him by being overjoyed in His Spirit. He is our joy everlasting and our joy complete. We claim that to be true and alongside it so many other Truths that should make us fly around the room on Sunday morning when we gather together to celebrate it, yet 99.9% of us stand there like stoic zombies as though we were completely unbelieving of the Truth we claim.

    Tracks 14-17, Lord Almighty they all just run together. The Miracle that He came for us, the joy and fun found in the Japanese/Eastern tonalities that so greatly expresses the joy of that Miracle, moving into the solid resolve and determination found behind the power of God Almighty None Compares, He being “all I need and being my everything, God Almighty, God Almighty….None compares to you, None compares to you, There is none like you….Holy Holy GOD ALMIGHTY!” and In The End, this song provides such a deep sense of closure not only to the album, but about what will happen when I go home to Jesus or when He returns in such Resplendent Light….

    KUDOS DC*B, the world would NOT be the same without you and your contributions/offerings of praise to the King and Maker of it all, to God be the glory and that is so evident in this album….congrats and enjoy everyone..

    I was impressed. It absolutely has an innovative touch to it. I seriously believe music like this are going to become real popular in the near future. It’s sort of a combination of pop, techno and disco. We’ll see 10 years from now. Looking forward to Passion 2010!

    Shadows (#4) is my favorite. I always love songs that speak of darkness and light. How we can turn to the Cross for comfort, yet also have to realize we are called to take up our own and follow Him.

    Overall, I love how the album is hinting at that ‘church music’ is something that does not have to be sung at church, yet a reflection of our lives that comes in various forms- a branch off of Remedy, but focusing on music. Pretty amazing work. Looking forward to singing some at Passion 2010 if not sooner.

    So what to even say… I would have been perfectly content if We Shall Not Be Shaken was the only sixsteps release for the next couple years as it is absolutely fabulous, but to follow up with this. WOW. Currently cant get Can I Lie Here out of my head. Perfect expression following up How He Loves! To just be in the presence of the One who has shown us His love and lets us sit in His presence and soak it in. Again, WOW. Although after the 3:31 of sitting in His arms, i sure do want to start dancing to Birmingham…

    Same here, not sure how to get in touch with you. I’m a youth leader of a small church in Toronto, Canada. I lead a youth retreat in July and watched your whole series of videos (Hope, Indescribable, Fruit Cake and Ice Cream, How Great is Our God)….we were definitely blessed!

    We are up to another youth retreat the first weekend of October (2,3 and 4th to be exact. Just wondering if you know more powerful videos I can get at the local Christian bookstore that I can use.

    Your love is relentless and I’m GLAD FOR IT! understatement of the year but if I keep repeating it sure changes everything! I have felt compeled to clap along (not easy while driving). If only the church lived so vibrant, enthusustic, creative, loud, tender, authentic…. BTW i had posted on my FB a line in from one of the songs. ON my way to take my 2 8th graders to a serving babysitting opportunity at a womens Bible Study we prayed and gave thanks. The woman in charge gave us the CD in thanks! The church is alive woohoo. Prayed for you all in Atlanta (while listening to the DC podcast while at the gym treadmilling). Saw the water and prayed for you all. oh to be drowned out by His love.

    Love the new Crowder CD. Crowder continues to show his musical abilities and his passion to lift up our Lord and Savior. This new CD just shows the cutting edge that Crowder has alway shown, however to much higher level.
    I am amazed by all the sound Crowder has brought to his music in a very tasteful way. This new CD is no exception. I belive David Crowder to be a musical genius. Louie I want to thank you and your team for what you are doing for Atlanta in the beginning stages of PCC. I am thankful to live in Atlanta and be a part of what God has in store for PCC.     Hello Pastor Louie, thank you for caring for our what we have to say! This is my honest experience with Church Music:

    When I first heard the album, I didn’t know what to make of it. It was so different, and the music just didn’t come into my ears. You know how there is music that gets jumbled in your mind? That’s what Church Music was for me.

    I read the magazine that came with the cd I pre-ordered. And it was the background information provided in that magazine that helped me gather enough focus to let the music from the new album settle down in my ears into my mind.

    And now, I think it’s great. I am beginning to distinguish song from song, and ultimately, the lyrics are what gets to me. It speaks the truth, and I am blessed by the songs. With the background information provided in the magazine, I can’t believe how deliberate each song is. Though it took more focus than usual on my part, I now see and appreciate what David Crowder Band produced. It seems to be more than music.. it’s a very deliberate, personal, and creative art.

    And you know what? Though it’s different, it speaks the truth, and it reaches an audience that usually wouldn’t be reached. If it takes new and different music to further God’s Kingdom, then so be it. I believe God is pleased with this unique expression and proclamation of praise. God is so much more than what I am familiar with, you know? Praise God for all that he is – all of him that I do know and don’t know yet!

    A Christian friend told me, “That doesn’t sound like Christian music! How is different from secular music?” And, though I myself wasn’t entirely comfortable with the music at first, my friend’s comment annoyed me. How judgmental and ignorant. He hadn’t even listened to the lyrics. What is the right Christian music style anyway? Is there one?

    To use David Crowder’s own comparison, if a lot of the CCM is the hypotenuse of a right triangle with the sides 3 and 4, then Church Music is the hypotenuse of a right triangle with the sides 3 and 3. So far I am more comfortable with a hypotenuse of 5 than with a hypotenuse of 4.24, an irrational number, but I want to become familiar with 4.24 too.

    I still am in the process of digesting each song. My ears were not used to the music, but it is already growing on me. I think David Crowder Band did a great job. Praise God for their talents.

    DC*B always comes out with great stuff. Im just reminded how awesome of a songwriter God is of Himself. He has given some great songs on this album.

    My favorites are definitely How He Loves, We Are Loved, Shadows, and The Veil.

    The reason i like The Veil so much is probably because of the Passion 2010 promo video.

    I got my pre-order package earlier than expected, before the 9/22 release date which was awesome in itself. This is a great piece of work. At first I wasn’t sure about the heavy use of synths. This album has a late 70’s, early 80’s feel to some of it. I love the disco feel of Church Music Dance and I swear I can hear some Beatles influence in there also. I love the continuous feel, like one big story. Phos Hilron is powerfull. My 8 year old daughter loves Happiness. I love the whole cd. Can’t wait to see them in Vegas Oct 8th. Any chance Pastor Loui will be at the Vegas show?

    Sorry, I know this go around is about the Cd but I was thinking about Hannah and the P.I. (Typhoon) today and thought I would let her know I was praying for her.

    I was trying to study at a local coffee shop the other day, which happened to be playing Church Music while I was there…and not just one song either, but the entire cd. Let’s just say that my studying wasn’t the most productive. Couldn’t really focus with the amazingness that was playing throughout the shop.

    Love that these guys make brilliant music about our God and King. My heart is stirred to worship. Today was a great day of rolling down the windows in the car and blaring “Oh Happiness” on my way home. Yes, it was on repeat. And yes, I might have danced.

    so i have had the album since its release and there are 4 songs that are on constant repeat :all around me , how he loves , Oh happiness, the veil . i love this entire cd and it has me dancing just like the other crowder albums.

    I love David Crowder Band, saw them live at Frenzy 09 here in Bonny Scotland and they are awsome, Church Music is another fantastic installment. Favorite song of the album has to be “Can I Lie Here” and there version of “All Around Me” is fantastic
