Halfway Home

It’s 1:30 AM local time in Dakar, Senegal (West Africa) and Shelley and I are waiting to connect to the JoBurg-Atlanta flight which is stopping here soon, the last leg of a journey that has literally taken us around the globe in eighteen days.  A stunning Cape Town sunset sent us on our way tonight, a color-rich memory of a five-city world tour leg that just simply cannot be put into words.  We’ve touched down in Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Johannesburg and Cape Town, places as diverse as can be, yet in many ways the same.  We’ve met 31,000 new friends, from UCT students in Cape Town to a Princess in Manila.  And we have heard the roar of an awakening generation that transcends language and culture.

In every place a similar eruption has happened during the night as the words to God Of This City have unfolded on the screens.  Leading up to the chorus the words state: There Is No One Like Our God, There Is No One Like Our God.  Something about that bedrock confession unleashes a sense of faith and hope that gives me chill bumps in every city and turns the atmosphere in the venues from concert to Church, His people united around the world.

And it’s true.  There is no one like our God!  Grace sets Him apart and makes our God-story beautifully unique and irresistible for anyone who as truly seen the cross.  And grace frees us to both live for the One who set us free and believe in its power to change a life, a city and a nation.

A few crazy weeks will pass [Crowder has a DVD release in theaters across the nation Monday and Charlie debuts his new CD in Atlanta on Tuesday night, and that's just the beginning of a hectic stretch] and soon we will be on our way to Mexico City for the start of leg three.  Over 11,000 free tickets have already been claimed for stop one in the heart of Mexico, and that with six weeks to go.  That bodes well for a two-day event we have all been looking forward to, one Cape Town is bridging the gap to with their prayers.  After that we head to Vancouver, Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong before a final event in lovely Sydney, where over 6200 tickets have gone. (Crazy!) But for now, it’s a pretty chilled (and notably sparse) Delta Transit lounge in Dakar and a massive amount of gratitude to God for including us in such an amazing endeavor.

    Louie,
I am from Vancouver, BC, CANADA. We are getting so excited for you, and the Passion team to arrive in our city. I have been helping with promotion and we are doing so well! The response has been mind-blowing in comparison to anything like this before! Greater things are still to be done in this city!

I have been in tune with the blog and podcast since the World Tour started and can’t stop using your word, “wow” to explain my feelings after each tour stop. God is soooo good!

I will continue to pray for you and the team as you rest up for the third leg and get ready to roll into Mexico City, and then VANCOUVER! I will continue to get the word about Passion Vancouver out and about on campuses as October 6th comes closer. Many blessings! Can’t wait!

  2. b/ Says:

You are a short drive from my parents (missionaries to an unreached people group just outside of Dakar, the Lebou).

Thank you for being faithful to the call Louie and Shelley

  5. Aslan's Girl Says:

His Grace is enough… that is so true. Thank you, Louie, for the reminder that there truly is no one like our God. And as Sam Adams once said, “From the rising to the setting sun, may HIS Kingdom come!”
And thank you for so faithfully uploading all the podcasts; they have been more of a blessing than you could realize! Hearing the roar from each city, with the spontaneous chants of “JESUS” thrown in (or “Jesu”, depending on where it was :), have become some of the greatest highlights of the past few months- actually of my life. This past one was also funny for me, because of when you were talking about how horrible it is to Christians in western culture to think of being sent to Africa… because that was my story to a T. I was saved at age six, but was terrified to give everything over to The LORD because I was certain that when I did He would “force me to marry a fat missionary and ship me off to Africa”- no joke, those exact words ran through my head MANY times, and helped to make my middle school years absolute misery. THANK GOD, when I was fourteen He delivered me from myself and took over with His dreams for my life and now those thoughts seem utterly absurd! But when you were talking about how there were probably African kids that were scared to trust God because He might “send them to America” I cracked up. You are probably exactly right… and if any of them are reading this I can say from personal experience: TRUST HIM- He is waaaay better at planning your life than you could ever be! And one day coming to America might not sound so bad after all… because I DEFINITELY want to come to AFRICA!!!! :)
Anyway, please forgive me for being so lenghty, but after the podcast I just had to share a little of my story with you, if only to let you know that you are right on track, Louie. ;)
Godspeed you and Shelley with plenty of rest and a safe flight home. And welcome back!
    All Love In Him,
    Christis Joy

Today is Sunday! More that a week away from Passion JHB. Yesterday night there was the most beautiful event hapening in the sky.

A “maanverduistering” (it’s Afrikaans, I don’t know what it is called in English, but it is whn the earth comes between the moon and the sun and the earth casts its shaddow over the moon!!!) :-) . I could not take my eyes off of it!! I was so beautiful!! Then I thought about how great God is and how lucky we are to know Him, to have Him as a friend, our Saviour, the creator of it all!!!! God is the Greatest amoung the Greatest and it is time that people must open their eyes and see how GREAT our God really is!!!

Enjoy the rest (if you are going to rest at all) and good luck with leg 3!! Thank you or what you have done in many young people’s lives around the world and in mine!!!

    Glory to God, Forever!!!

    Lots of Love from Johannesburg,SA!!!

  8. Sandra R. Says:

Yes, that song has a completely different meaning for me now… It’s become a generation’s declaration and battle cry!

I was at Passion Paris and had two college students from Texas with me. While we were standing in line waiting for the doors to open, we met some girls from Germany. One of them was singing, “There is no one like our God…”. I had been singing that same line all over Paris all day as we had been prayerwalking in some places, so I was way excited to hear it and echoed back to her, “There is no one like our God!” She looked surprised that I knew the song, but we instantly realized an amazing connection that was beyond words in that moment (or at least I did – she could have thought that I was a crazy American!)… She had such a huge smile on her face; it was such a beautiful moment.
We had also met a few other French college students while we were waiting in line. These guys really struck a chord in my heart because one of them said in his broken English, “Young people like us – we are ready for revival in France – we believe it!”

Amazing times, and we get to see some of it happening right in front of us! Thanks for being so faithful to share the stories of these cities, Louie.
Praying with you all and for you all!

    “Sing to the LORD, all the earth;
proclaim his salvation day after day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous deeds among all peoples.
    For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;
he is to be feared above all gods.”
    - 1 Chronicles 16:23-25

    Hi Mr./ Sir Louie…

It’s so much about God’s grace and everything…

and so here’s the thing I need to tell you,
I hope this is gonna be the right time and at the right place to reach you and to tell you how much God love us and how much He wants to change us in His unimaginable ways of truth…

God has told me something on August 6th 2008, the time when I was praying for Johannesburg , and I need to talk to you, of course not thru this, I was confused but I did pray many times , and He kept telling me to tell you about this, because something is gonna change and it’s a BIG CHANGE….

Pld don’t get me wrong, I’m just totally a messenger and just like a messenger , has to do my duty to reach you and make sure it comes to the right person to hear this message…

thank you so much Louie, I need to talk to you, I believe, God’s plan is growing and growing always!

thank you, I miss you guys visiting us again,
God bless you all and we would never be like this w/o Him…

Is it only a week ago we had our turn in Jhb??? Still on a spiritual high here..
The words from Chris Tomlin cd “Not to us”? – come home running -
    “So come home running
    His arms are open wide
    His name is Jesus
    And He understands
    He is the answer
    You are looking for
    So come home running
    Just as you are.”
How beautiful these words are and hearing them made me think of Ashley and all other “ashleys”
His name is Jesus and boy does He understand us…..

I don’t even really know what to say but THANK YOU Passion team!

I volunteered in Manila & Jakarta and although I’ve heard Ashley’s story for a total of 3 times now (1st time was in LA), the GRACE of God is just something I never get tired of hearing. Thank you so much for loving students all over the globe and for letting God use each & every single one of you. I am 1 of the many people who are blessed by your ministry so thank you sooo much!! I have met so many incredible people through Passion and am just so privilege to get to see a little bit of what God is doing all over the world. Things like this never gets featured in the news but it’s just so great to know that the Kingdom of God is growing.

    Louie,

I’ve read on a blog you might be planting a church and pastoring. Can you share if that’s true? I believe you would make a great pastor since you are a great shepherd. My wife and I saw you when the How Great Is Our God Tour came to Dallas in 2007.

She has recently finished reading your i am not book.

I’m in Bible college so if you need an assistant pastor I’ll see about coming to Atlanta.

I am also in my final year of graduating, like Ashley, studying theology(believe it or not).

So all I want to say is THAT NOTHING IS TOO BIG FOR OUR GOD!!

  26. Markus Says:

God bless you guys. I feel such a part in God’s plan for the world, just by knowing the bond I share with believers around the world who prayed for us in Jozi and for whom I’m praying now.

  27. barbie in australia Says:

Hi Louie, Shelly, Chris and all the Passion crew!!
Thanks so much for the podcasts and the blog – I too am part of the praying army – and so looking forward to being a part of Passion in Sydney (as a volunteer, as I am way over college age!) I love you guys so much, the love of God in you and in me is so real – we are truely one, no matter where on this wonderful God breathed planet we live.

Thanks for connecting the world this way – for being obedient to the Holy Spirit when He gave you guys the idea for a world tour. Would have been more comfortable to stay home I am sure, but what amazing, incredible sights and sounds you would have missed out on then. And we (the 97 podcast listeners!) would have missed out too.

I so enjoy your podcasts and say “thank You God for blessing Louie with strength to keep going long enough to talk on the podcast even though he is obviously so wasted, spent, I think was your word.” God is so good and gives strength to those who wait on Him.

I am so excited for what God will do in Sydney among our people, He is igniting a giant flame of passion for His glorious Son all over the globe and Sydney will burst into fire as well, I know it. So – thanks again for taking us all on (the world!) and going the way of Christ – He loves you all so much, and knows your frame, and He will be your shield and high tower all the days of your lives. Loving you from Australia – praying forever with you all.

awesome- we’ve been praying for ya’ll as you head home.

  29. Mayra Says:

I am super excited for the Mexico City Passion Tour Stop!!!!

  30. Rodrigo Says:

I for one can say the Passion World Tour changed my life because God used it so powerfully…

I can totally relate to David Crowder’s song the Glory of it all: “It’s a new day! Things wil never be the same! We will never be the same!”

God made himself so present during the 4 sessions of Passion Sao Paulo and has trully and so mercifully awakened me to really live for His glory. Because our lives here are like the flame of a match… but God can use our little flames to make a difference for His glory, and this way my little flame will burn eternally FOR him, for HIS glory. And that’s not something we have to do: it’s the only thing to do once you realize who we are and who God is, and what he’s done for us, and, man, I could go on and on forever! :-)

It was really a wake up call to completely surrender to God and let him do whatever He wants to bring glory to His name. And it’s amazing, it’s such a privilege and an undeserved honor to be in fellowship with God… I pray God will use me as He wants, and that I will always be ready to say YES to Him. I just want my life to count… so that in that very Day around His throne when God will be glorified I’ll be able to rejoice and say: “Yes! That’s what I gave my life for!” The words of every talk, specially yours, Louie, are still fresh in my mind (and I’ve shared them with some friends and they were really blessed by them as well).

So, what can I say? Right on! :-)
Keep up the excelent work for His renown! We’ll be there praying for all of you all along. For greater things are still to be done in these cities!

And here I can only quote Chris’s words from one of my favorite songs ever since Passion Sao Paulo:

    “Oh great God!
    Be glorified!
    Our lives laid down
    Yours magnified!
    Oh great God!
    Be lifted high!
    THERE IS NONE LIKE YOU”

    Love

this is crazy coz i feel like, we are all part of this huge family, i imagine sitting around a table on a sunday i guess, and we are all exchanging our crazy experiences, and one person says well i remember when i went to passion conference in joburg, and another from down there somewhere is like oh my word i went to passion cape town, and so it goes, its really cool, well at least i think so,

glad to hear you guys are home safe, thank you for the update, i almost called you friend, DO YOU THINK YOU’D BE COOL WITH THAT, BEING FRIENDS THAT IS, well you my friend

this is going to crack you up, i gave one of my dvd’s ” indescribable” to a girl i work with, her husband lost his job recently so he’s not doing so well, anyway she has been down too so i was like well i dont really know what to say to her and am not sure where she stands with Christ, so i had to bite the bullet and hope she doesnt think im a nut after she’d seen the dvd, who wants people thinking they’re a nut when what they actually are is a “FRUITCAKE”, turns out she absolutely loved it and has not given it back for over a week now(decided she can keep it, now she wants to pay and im like its cool, there’s plenty where those came from), she wants to show it to her mom, cousins, but this is what cracked me up, her husband absolutely hated it apparently and he says you sound like a POLITICIAN ” i know thats completely odd”, the funny thing is i know a seed has been planted, and with prayer and time God is going to water it (can you see the big tree providing shade, well i can), the girl was asking if you have any other material, so what do you know i went off on a tangent,

greater things are still to be done in this city, please stand in the gap with me, ever since i gave her the dvd she has been asking questions, and im like oh my word GOD please dont let me screw this up, Matt 11:28, Learn to rest, keeps popping into my head, so i know GOD has got this,

thank you very much once again,

many blessings to you and your family and the rest of the team.

  44. Katie Hines Says:

I have loved watching the blog explode with activity these past few weeks. Last week, I drove through rural Kansas on my way back to school, singing Mighty to Save with thousands of Philipino students via podcast. That… was… nuts.

I wanted to laugh and cry and dance and scream all at once, from Atlanta ‘07, to Paris in June, to spreading the Story at K-State this year… what a life, Louie. What a love to live out. It just never gets old.

  45. Christie Says:

I have been “stealing” my husband’s I-pod and listening to “God of this City” and just praying for my church, my city, my state (TN), our country, our world. Proclaiming those words as truth for all people! The image of the young man in Brazil that continuously waved his flag for the duration of worship is burned in my mind. How awesome, to love so much. Praying for safe travels. God bless!

  46. Matt Says:

Thank you for the updates Louie. I just listened to the last podcast about “The Cape of Good Hope” and I was just about ready to break down and cry because it is so incredible to hear people coming to know the One who makes life worth living.

Thank you for being faithful to do the will of God. I’m so excited to partner with you guys in the journey through prayer. Will continue to pray and believe in all that God can do in these cities and ultimately, this WORLD.

    GLORY TO GOD FOREVER!!!!!!!

I’ve often thought that he will never do it and I get so worried about him because he is a wreckless driver. But the story about this girl, Ashley has put new hope in my heart I am praying that my Ashley can wake up to the reality like the girl Ashley did, who Louie spoke about. I am so moved by the miracles and hope that I have already seen.
    Our God reigns!
    Lots of love

    i recall that old song…
“what a mighty God we serve. what a mighty God we serve. The angels bow before Him. Heaven and earth adore Him. What a mighty God we serve”

So true – He is mighty to save. My prayer is that God would continue to pour out His blessings on those places Passion has been too – a continual swelling in the knowledge of Jesus the Saviour of the world – to the extent it overflows out and into those surrounding :).

Praying for Mexico, Canada and everywhere else you go – and of course Oz!
And of course praying for the development of Passion Church! God’s guidance, wisdom and leading in everything.

    Rest, recover.

See you in just over 2 months.

    Cheers, anneline

Charlie is already up to #24 on itunes! Too bad i preordered mine so i cant contribute to that position. But after 2 listens, I absolutely love what he is offering this time. His songs challenge me in the hard times, and also inspire worship no matter what the situation. Thanks so much Charlie and band.

    Hi Friend.

Greetings from Hong Kong. We are so ready for you guys to get here! Actually, we have a lot to do to get ready logistically, but our hearts are ready to see this city erupt in praise. All of us feel that God is about to do something totally spectacular in this city. And I get chills every time I think that God is allowing me to be a part of it. He is such a gracious God.

I’ve followed the podcasts of this second World Tour, and I’m amazed but not surprized at what I heard. I am also encouraged and renewed. Thanks for taking the time out of what sounds like a totally exhausting schedule to blog and podcast.

October 16 can’t get here soon enough!

Hi Louie and the Passion Team

I came along to the Passion night at Cape Town and was totally blessed. Thank you for your obendience in stepping out!

I am a teacher at alocal, government, junior school in Cape Town. The Grade 6’s are studying the solar system. I suggested to my colleague to watch the indescrible dvd. She watched it and was totally blown away by the dvd. She hovers with opinions on “Christianity” and I was totally surprised that she agreed to watch the dvd. She not only went home to watch it but has got the whole grade watching it too! Isn’t God good! I am so excited to see God weave His way into people’s lives largely without them noticing!

So, please be encouraged! God’s work through you is reaching the far ends of the earth. People are hearing about Him and lives are in line to be changed!

    God bless!

    Hey Louie and team

I’m also from SA.Though I couldn’t come either of the conferences,I have friends who went. Now I can boast and say,”I have friends who’ve actually seen Louie Giglio, the Indescribable guy!”.Anyways, you have brought so much blessing in my life in a way you can never imagine.I think SA is starting on a Louie Giglio movement.I have seen the Indescribable dvd and the Hope dvd,and must say that I saw them at the perfect time in my life.I just saw the Hope Dvd at our campus ministry tonight and needed that so much. You have ministered to me in such an amazing way.

After watching the Indescribable DVD at the church, when I went home for the vac,my younger brother had bought me the DVD.This is amazing for 2 reasons:
1.My younger brother is not saved and,
    2. I didn’t tell him that I had seen the dvd.
I’ve shared the dvd with my familly and soon the whole church back home will see it soon this December (if I have my way!).My younger brother is crazy about you.I think he is just over hearing the word being preached in the same old boring way(we practically grew up in church), and your style is just something refreshing.

May God bless you and Shelley. And may he give you your heart’s desire in abundance!

  56. Daniel Surles Says:

Louie, I just want to write you and say that I am in the United States Coast Guard, and a few weeks ago we were in Dakar, Senegal. We did what we call COMREL project there, in the Christian world we would have called it a Mission Trip. We painted a school there and helped them clean up. This school was about 30ft wide and maybe about 20ft long. With two very small court yards where they taught at everyday. After we got done we donated several boxes of school supplies that a local school from Charleston, SC donated. The people that were in charge of the school and the neighborhood almost started crying and they told us that we had just helped over 200 students that day. They prepared for us a huge meal, that was traditional African meal which to our surprise was very good. That day people saw God at work. It was inspiring to everyone, it will be a day that I will not forget, and if I ever get another opportunity to do it again, I’ll be there in a blink of an eye.

Our mission now has changed and we are one of two boats that are allowed into the Black Sea from the US Military. We currently have pallets full of supplies on the back of our boat for Georgia. Georgia if you do not know is a country very dependant upon imports, and right now Russia has pretty much scared off all merchant vessles so Georgia cannot recieve the supplies it needs for survival. We have baby diapers, food, snacks, hygiene kits, juice, soap, shampoo, toilet paper, milk, and all your usual items you need to survive and we are en route to Georgia. I cannot stop praying for the people of Georgia and even the people of Russia, I just hope this comes to a peaceful resolution quickly.

Finally I just wanted to take one moment to say thank you. I am the Lay Leader aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Dallas and we have watched two of your DVD’s in Devine Services. Devine Services is pretty much our church for the week, we get one hour a week where a group of people get together and just get a chance to worship. The Lay Leader is the person in charge of everything, and I tell you it is a lot harder than I thought it would be. I am a leader of a small group back home in Charleston, but this is completely different, you are in the eyes of every single person on the boat everyday. So if you stumble and fall or if you have a bad day everyone notices. But luckily we have such a great God that understands and forgives, and He puts people like you to help inspire us. So I just want to say again thank you for everything you do, and I pray for you and your travels.
    Take care and God bless,
    -Daniel Surles

G’day im Michael, im from South Australia. louie the sunset photo captured my attention, i recon its amazing and diffrent to any sunset we get here in Aus, my family own a farm and it’s situated the same hight from sea level as Mt Lofty (a huge summit 10 minutes from Adelaide CBD).

After watching some of your talks like (indescribable) its pretty amazing coz i just walk out at 5:30pm and check out a sunset over the padock 210 degree wide and high as the eye can see, whilst our big gum trees become a image outlined by the colour of the sunset and white dirt roads look golden.

You stand out there and all of a sudden trouble, problems, stress anything will just disapear. Some of these displays leave you breathless yet feeling so close to God and free. I love laying down in the middle of 1000 acers or sitting on the old combine on a warm night gazing into the amazing colours, it must be Gods signiture… thank mate(s) i love ya ministry you should come to Australia! God bless, catch ya lada!
    Michael
